Last Saturday 26 June 2021, the Hon Ken Wyatt MP, Federal Minister for Indigenous Affairs, and Hon Sussan Ley MP, Federal Minister for the Environment, attended a ceremony in Jabiru to handover the formal deed of grant of Jabiru to the Kakadu Aboriginal Land Trust, marking the return of Jabiru to the Mirarr Traditional Owners. This paved the way for the commencement of the new Jabiru township lease held by Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation Jabiru Town (GACJT).
From today, 1 July 2021, the previous tenure arrangements in Jabiru come to an end. To prepare for this, GACJT has worked hard to ensure that new arrangements are in place starting from today. All affected occupiers in Jabiru have now received notification of the immediate interim arrangements and GACJT will work with these entities to negotiate and finalise sub-leases over the coming months.
GACJT has been working with both the Commonwealth and Northern Territory Governments, the Northern Land Council, West Arnhem Regional Council, Energy Resources of Australia Ltd, Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation, Jabiru Kabolkmakmen Ltd (JKL) and other public and private entities since it was established in November 2020 to prepare for today and the transition in the coming months.
GACJT acknowledges the support of the Commonwealth government in establishing the new corporation and the role of JKL in undertaking critical transition planning funded by the Northern Territory Government.
