GACJT is proud to share that the Jabiru Lakeside Precinct, which forms part of Mirarr’s Masterplan for Jabiru, received the following Australian Institute of Landscape Architecture (AILA) Awards:
- 2024 AILA NT Award of Excellence for Cultural Heritage
- 2024 AILA NT Regional Achievement Award
- 2024 AILA NT Landscape Architecture Award for Tourism
Congratulations to Mirarr for your continued efforts to ensure that Jabiru transitions from a mining to a tourism and government services hub whilst ensuring that both culture and the environment are protected. Congratulations to Enlocus, Stafford Strategy, Common onemilegrid and GHD for your expertise to bring this concept to the surface.
AILA’s Award Citations notes: “Located in the stunning dual World Heritage listed Kakadu National Park in the top end of the Northern Territory, the Jabiru Lakeside Precinct Masterplan was developed in response to the closure of the Ranger Uranium Mine, and the termination of the associated township lease.
The Masterplan, along with its accompanying Business Case, skilfully articulates the spatial and urban infrastructure necessary to pivot the town away from its previous mining economy. It was conceived through close culturally sensitive collaboration and consultation with the Gundjeihmi Aboriginal Corporation and the Mirarr people, the Traditional Owners of the subject land, to ensure the project’s vision is respectful to their long-term aspirations and values.
The Masterplan ensures that every revision to existing place, infrastructural insertion and guiding decision prioritises social, environmental, economic and cultural sustainability for the local community and the region…
The Business Case reflects on Jabiru’s unique location and supports both the Traditional Owners’… aspiration of transforming Jabiru into a nationally and internationally recognised tourism destination, and a major regional government service centre to support Arnhem Land. The Business Case offers the pathway to realise this aspiration, and the first project from the Masterplan, being the Bininj Resource Centre, is currently in the design phase and on its way to being realised.”
